India annually contributes the largest number of migrants to both Australia and New Zealand. "Indians and the Antipodes: Networks, Boundaries and Circulation" 2018 book edited by Sekhar Bandyopadhyay and Jane Buckingham "is the first book that seeks to juxtapose histories of Indian migration to Australia and New Zealand in a comparative framework to show their interconnectedness as well as dissimilarities. Side by side with stories of collective suffering and struggles of the diaspora, it focuses on individual resilience, enterprise and social mobility. It analyses 'White Australia' and 'White New Zealand' policies of the early twentieth century to point to their interconnected histories. It also looks critically at the more recent migration, its changing nature and the challenges it poses to both the migrant communities and the host societies."[80]

In 1997, due to difference in political views with the then West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Somendra Nath Mitra, Banerjee left the Congress Party in West Bengal and became one of the founding members of the All India Trinamool Congress, along with Mukul Roy.[52] It quickly became the primary opposition party to the long-standing Communist government in the state. I am writing to your good-self to bring to your attention the inconvenience being faced by the residents of Ras Vihar. There are many open and broken manholes on the roads in our colony. These open manholes pose serious threats to the residents, especially during the rainy seasons. We have written many letters requesting the concerned authorities but to no avail. Owing to these manholes, everyday there is a mishap of some sort.

I on behalf of the residents of the colony appeal to you to relieve us of the inconvenience we have been facing for so many weeks. Our children, elderly, and other people are getting hurt every day, not to mention the harassment we are constantly facing. Kindly either repair the manholes. To establish the importance of the traditions and statements of this eyewitness and close companion, Dr Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, it is deemed essential to mention his relationship with Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Professor Athar Siddiqui, who compiled the above-mentioned book, writes:

"First confirmed case of monkeypox emerging in Delhi is something to be worried about. The Delhi government should take extra precautions so as not to repeat the Covid-19 pandemic bungle when thousands of people lost their lives due to a shortage of medicines, medical oxygen, and hospital beds," Delhi Congress president Anil Kumar said.

The India-Gulf region is the second-largest migration corridor in the world. Of the nearly 31 million non-resident Indians (NRIs), an estimated 8.5 million are working in the Gulf.[5] [See Table 1.] Indians constitute over 30% of the expatriate workforce in the Gulf States, where the proportion of non-nationals in the employed population is among the highest in the world.[6]

The disproportionately harmful effects of the pandemic on the Indian poor are bound to extend to Indian migrant workers in the Gulf, most of whom are also among the most vulnerable, by virtue of their occupation and skill profile, concentrated in low- and semi-skilled jobs.[42] Those workers who are in preventive quarantine or who have tested positive for the virus face the prospect of unpaid wages, arbitrary dismissal, and deportation. This precarious situation is arguably even more acute for the indeterminate number of workers who are irregular residents.
