Plot
The film revolves around Sivagiri (Vijay), a brave and honest young man who lives in a village with his parents and sister Karpagam (Mallika). He works as a welder in a factory and is also a vigilante who fights against injustice in his village. He is in love with Subha (Trisha), a college student who comes to his village for her research project. Sivagiri's life takes a turn when he decides to go to Chennai to get his sister married to her lover Ravi (Yugendran), who is the son of a rich businessman Raj Guru (Manoj K. Jayan).
In Chennai, Sivagiri witnesses the atrocities of a gangster named Saniyan Sagadai (Kota Srinivasa Rao), who controls the city's underworld activities with the help of his henchmen Patasu Balu (Pasupathy) and Kannappan (Benjamin). Sivagiri also learns that Raj Guru is a corrupt police officer who works for Saniyan Sagadai and has been torturing Ravi and his family for their property. Sivagiri decides to take on Saniyan Sagadai and Raj Guru and protect his sister and her lover from their clutches. He also gets the support of an honest police inspector Inba Raghavan (Livingston) and an assistant commissioner Raj (Aryan).

The film received mixed reviews from critics. Sify.com gave the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote: "Thirupachi is a typical Vijay mass masala entertainer that has all the ingredients that his fans love- comedy, sentiments, punch lines and action. The film is a rehash of many of his earlier films and is predictable but Perarasu has packaged it well with some good songs and slick editing."
Rediff.com gave the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote: "Thirupachi is a typical Vijay film. It has all the ingredients that make his films work -- action, comedy, sentiment and romance. But it also has all the clichés that make his films boring -- a wafer-thin plot, a predictable screenplay, a loud background score and over-the-top stunts."
The Hindu wrote: "Perarasu's Thirupachi is a potpourri of all the Vijay hits so far. The director has not even attempted to give it a different look or treatment. The only difference is that this time the hero takes on the baddies in Chennai instead of Madurai."
The film was a commercial success at the box office, grossing over 30 crore worldwide. It was declared a blockbuster and ran for 175 days in theatres. It was also remade in Kannada as Thangigagi (2006) starring Darshan and in Telugu as Annavaram (2006) starring Pawan Kalyan.
